Jackhammer Construction Noise

Jackhammer Construction Noise

Jackhammer construction noise can be very annoying when it happens near your home, but it represents a serious health risk to the operator of the jackhammer and nearby workers.

The noise from a jackhammer can reach as high as 130dB, which is 45dB above the most commonly used maximum acceptable noise exposure level of 85dB over a span of 8 hours.  At levels above 85dB a person cannot spend 8 hours around the noise source without some form of hearing protection or they will suffer hearing loss in addition to other health issues.  At 130dB the amount of time you can safely be around the noise source without hearing protection is 0 minutes.

Occupational hearing loss is one of the most common work-related physical conditions in the United States.  According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, roughly 22 million workers are exposed to noise levels that are considered hazardous.
